چکیده

The Context Lens (CL) is a focus+context visualization and navigation tool particularly suited for navigating large documents, or collections of documents. Context Lenses have been applied successfully to navigating Web pages, video collections and slide presentations. In this paper we discuss our experiences both with linear as well as with hierarchical Context Lenses. We focus on the use of information scent in the hierarchical Context Lens, and on supporting an exploratory navigation style in documents. Exploratory navigation is supported by the fact that a CL delays commitment in the user interface through an interaction style called brushing. Brushing lowers the cost of exploring a section of the document and therefore does not only support, but actively encourage an exploratory navigation style. This aspect of Context Lenses is especially valuable for navigation of large amounts of media data on low bandwidth devices, such as wireless PDAs.

1d-mosaics Grouping Using Lattice Vector Quantization for a Video Browsing Application

1D-mosaics have been introduced as a tool for structuring and navigation in video content. These objects can be considered as the spatio-temporal signatures of the video shots. Our work aims at grouping automatically the video shots into scenes using these signatures. The original method is based on the tree-structured lattice vector quantization of the 1D-mosaics. Because of the hierarchical s...

'It's the Journey & the Destination': shape and the emergent property of genre in evaluating digital documents

Navigation is a limited metaphor for hypermedia and website use that potentially constrains our understanding of human-computer interaction. In the present paper we trace the emergence of the navigation metaphor and the empirical analysis of navigation measures in usability evaluation before suggesting an alternative concept to consider: shape. The shape concept affords, we argue, a richer anal...

Browsing and navigation of AOF documents as an example for easy and comfortable interaction with general multimedia documents

Accessing, navigating and browsing multimedia documents from a digital library should be as easy as reading and working with textbooks. However, common user interfaces for replay of multimedia data often assume a more passive, consuming attitude of the user. To be useful, techniques and features are required that allow more user interaction during replay of multimedia data, especially in a teac...

An Investigation into Feature Effectiveness for Multimedia Hyperlinking

The increasing amount of archival multimedia content available online is creating increasing opportunities for users who are interested in exploratory search behaviour such as browsing. The user experience with online collections could therefore be improved by enabling navigation and recommendation within multimedia archives, which can be supported by allowing a user to follow a set of hyperlin...
